Tour description
Suited for cyclists of all backgrounds, the Rhine cycle trail leads from Constance on Lake Constance to the mouth of the North Sea at Hoek van Holland. As such, it crosses or touches Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany, France and the Netherlands. From the Swiss Alps to the North Sea, the Rhine has enabled cultural and economic exchange between the Alps and Northern Europe for more than 2,000 years.
The Rheinhessen section is a core part of this 1,230 km long European long-distance cycling path and connects the Palatinate and the romantic Rhine area. A short 90 km ride takes you past bustling shipping activities along the river, the floodplain-like Old Rhine areas, and the famous vineyards and wine villages of the Rhine terrace region. Of course, you can also stop for a refreshment at any time. In Bingen, the cycle path to the Nibelungen town of Worms follows.
From Bingen to Mainz, there is no real elevation, so the trails are suitable for everyone who doesn't mind longer saddle time. Hand bikers also enjoy this flat track, even if a few sections are a bit narrow. Racing cyclists must be prepared for sudden braking manoeuvres, though. Children and bikes with trailers might have problems getting around some corners, posts, crossings, and other difficult spots, but the long, easy distances in between compensate for that.
